- In this first lesson of the Learn Drupal Series we're going to be looking at how to13s
- install Drupal locally on your own computer rather than having to deal with17s
- a web server that's out on the web. This is particularly important when working21s
- with development versions of code, because you may be introducing security25s
- vulnerabilities. You don't want people necessarily getting in to those on the web.28s
- It's also just a lot easier to work on your own local computer and do all the things32s
- you have to do, whether you're online or off. So what we're going to be doing36s
- is looking at how to get a local web server set up that you can run your websites on40s
- and then we'll be downloading and installing Drupal 8. 44s
- In this video we'll be looking at the Drupal Ladder.47s
- And if we scroll down here and look at the very first step down at the bottom of the51s
- ladder it's to install Drupal locally. When we click through there, you're going to see55s
- there are three steps that are involved in this lesson. Install the Dev Desktop.58s
- Download Drupal 8 and then Launch Drupal 8 on our Dev Desktop.01m 03s
- This is going to get a local version of Drupal running. 01m 07s
- In order to install Drupal locally, we also need to have a web server on our local01m 11s
- computer. There are many ways to achieve this.01m 15s
- But in this video we're going to be using the Dev Desktop.01m 18s
- You can find Dev Desktop at Acquia.com, and on their free download section.01m 21s
- Once you get there, we're going to download the Drupal 7 version, 01m 27s
- pick the operating system you're on. I'm on a Mac. So I'll go ahead and click the 01m 29s
- download button for the Mac version. It's going to pop up a dialogue asking for01m 33s
- some info, but I can click this link down here that says "No, thanks -01m 37s
- Just take me to the download." And I'm going to go ahead and download01m 40s
- that to my desktop. It might take you a few minutes.01m 43s
- So, once you've downloaded it, go to where you downloaded it – I put it on my desktop.01m 46s
- You'll notice this is a .dmg. On Windows it would be an .exe.01m 51s
- You're going to install it just like any other application in your operating system.01m 54s
- So I'm just going to go ahead and go through the the normal steps01m 59s
- run the installer here, and it's gonna - this will open up and start an installation02m 02s
- wizard for us to kind of walk through.02m 07s
- As we work our way through the installer, first it's going to let me know what I'm02m 10s
- installing, which is always a good thing to know. So we can see all that.02m 14s
- License Agreement. Locations – where does the Dev Desktop actually live?02m 18s
- That's in my Applications folder. And then all of my sites - the site it's going to build02m 25s
- and any other sites I want are going to be in my Sites folder, which again is typical.02m 28s
- But you can set those wherever you want.02m 33s
- Ports – I would recommend you leave these alone, so that you don't accidentally02m 35s
- conflict with other Apache and MySQL stuff that could be running on your system,02m 37s
- like MAMP. Um, I'm going to go ahead and fill in basic Drupal settings02m 43s
- for my first Drupal site – which it's gonna go ahead and build for me.02m 48s
- Review, and then we'll click Next. And it's going to begin the installation.02m 53s
- This is going to take a while, so you probably want to go grab a cup of coffee...02m 59s
- and then, you know, come back to it. As this finishes up, it's going to run through03m 03s
- it's cleanup here and then I launch the new Dev Desktop.03m 08s
- It's all good and well – we now have Dev Desktop, so we have a local web server 03m 15s
- with some Drupal. But we have Drupal 7. We need to get Drupal 8.03m 18s
- So let's go back to our Lesson. And if I click the link for download Drupal 8 on this one03m 23s
- you'll see that we have a link that takes us directly to wherever we need to be,03m 29s
- which is pretty handy. Um, and uh, so this is releases for Drupal core03m 33s
- and I can select the 8x API version and then I'll get the 8x dev03m 37s
- – the development version for Drupal 8 that we want to play with.03m 43s
- I'll also show you how you can do this without using that direct link though. 03m 47s
- It's handy but you may not have that. If I go to Download & Extend you'll see this is for03m 51s
- Drupal 7 but we just want Drupal 8, so I'm going to go to Drupal core directly,03m 56s
- so I can get sort of the full list. And under here, again, there's only 7 and 604m 00s
- but if I go down to this link underneath that says "View all releases" – that's where04m 05s
- I can get the latest development work, uh – and this takes me back to that same screen04m 08s
- I say I want version 8, and then you can see I have Drupal 8x dev.04m 13s
- Which is exactly what we want for helping on core. Download zip or tarball, 04m 19s
- whichever you want. So I'm going to click this and download it.04m 24s
- I'm going to go ahead and save it to my Sites directory. You'll see that's where the04m 27s
- the initial Acquia Drupal site was put but the rest of my sites are here as well.04m 31s
- So I'm going to save it directly into that directory. And once I have that04m 36s
- downloaded, go back to sites here and then I'm going to unzip that.04m 40s
- So that I can get my Drupal goodness.04m 45s
- That creates a folder called drupal8xdev. You can see this is Drupal core.04m 49s
- Its files look different. And I can also rename this folder to anything I want,04m 54s
- just for convenience sake. So I'm just going to name this Drupal 8.04m 58s
- But you can name it whatever you want to.05m 02s
- Ok so now onto our final step for this lesson –05m 05s
- which is to actually get our new Drupal 8 site that we just downloaded05m 08s
- running on our Dev Desktop.05m 11s
- We're going to start off by launching the Acquia Dev Desktop. Get that running.05m 14s
- And you'll see we have a settings button here.05m 19s
- So, there's some standard settings stuff in terms of how you want to use it in ports05m 22s
- but the important stuff that we need to do – is first of all we need to change our05m 25s
- PHP version. 5.3 is required for Drupal 8. So we need to make sure that we05m 29s
- change that or our Drupal 8 site's not going to work right.05m 34s
- So let's apply those settings before we proceed. It restarts things.05m 38s
- Everything looks good. So now I'll go back into here and actually set up my site.05m 41s
- And you'll notice that the original, uh site that we had setup here is now on 5.3 so05m 45s
- that's – I'm using the right version of PHP first.05m 51s
- Now I'm going to go browse to that Drupal 8, uh code that I downloaded, right?05m 55s
- So, I'll just browse there. I want it to create a new database for me. 06m 00s
- I'm just going to call it drupal8. We can be creative.06m 04s
- I also want to set up a subdomain so that this is the url I'll go to for this particular site.06m 07s
- And I'll go ahead and click that. And it actually does the Drupal installation for me.06m 13s
- Sets up the database and things, so now I just run through the regular Drupal installer06m 19s
- and I have Drupal 8 installed. We'll run through and do the site information.06m 24s
- Real quickly... Site Name. I need to just fill out – 06m 30s
- this is just the normal Drupal installation, it's just that the Dev Desktop 06m 34s
- went ahead and created the database for me and kind of got all of that set up.06m 37s
- Which is handy.06m 41s
- And yes, I will be particular and change it to the right city, not just the timezone. 06m 42s
- And then once I save this, um here is my new Drupal 8, localhost web site,06m 48s
- so that I can begin playing with what's going on with Drupal 8 world,06m 56s
