- It's designed to get people involved in the community.18s
- So we'll be looking at some background on this project,21s
- how it got started, what the goals are,24s
- and then we'll be looking at how you can actually get involved26s
- and progress to becoming a contributor yourself.28s
- This first video is going to be looking at the background32s
- into the presentation just to get a little bit of sense of what's going on34s
- and where things are going,37s
- and then all of the subsequent videos in this series39s
- will cover each individual lesson in what they call 42s
- The Drupal Ladder,45s
- which is a series of lessons46s
- to teach you, step by step, how to become a contributor48s
- and apply what you learn in the Drupal community.52s
- The Drupal Ladder Project was a community initiative55s
- that started in 2011.57s
- It was originally called the Boston Initiative59s
- and changed its name to Learn Drupal01m 01s
- and is now currently known as The Drupal Ladder.01m 04s
- The purpose of this project01m 06s
- was to get more people contributing to Drupal Core,01m 09s
- and it does this by teaching people01m 12s
- the skills that they need,01m 14s
- exposing them to the tools that they need01m 16s
- to use within the Drupal Community01m 18s
- and also, teaching people 01m 20s
- not just Drupal best practices in terms of code,01m 23s
- but also how to actually interact with the community and work with the community.01m 26s
- The problem, which is actually being address by this project,01m 30s
- is that there simply aren't enough people who are working on Core.01m 34s
- Now if you look at this, in this chart here,01m 37s
- you can see that the number of contributors has risen01m 42s
- over time,01m 45s
- and we actually almost have one-thousand contributors for Drupal Seven,01m 47s
- which is a good number of people,01m 50s
- but if you flip this around and look at it01m 53s
- from the other side01m 57s
- in terms of the percentage of people who are actually using Drupal in the community,01m 59s
- it has gone down dramatically over time.02m 03s
- So community has been expanding at a really rapid pace,02m 05s
- and the number of people who are actually helping with Core02m 09s
- is not keeping pace with that.02m 12s
- So we're currently down to one-tenth of one percent,02m 14s
- which is one out of every thousand people02m 18s
- who are contributing to Drupal Core,02m 20s
- which is, of course, the base of what we're all using.02m 22s
- Another way that you can look at this02m 27s
- is by looking at the amount of work that actually needs to be done.02m 28s
- As of May of 2012, 02m 32s
- there were seven thousand open issues for 02m 34s
- Drupal Core, Drupal 7, and Drupal 8,02m 37s
- Drupal 7 being in current stable release,02m 40s
- and then Drupal 8 being the new version that's in development currently.02m 43s
- You can see from looking at this chart02m 47s
- that only one percent of the open issues02m 49s
- are reviewed and tested by the community.02m 52s
- Basically ready to go.02m 54s
- There's a large chunk that still needs to be reviewed,02m 57s
- and an even larger chunk that actually still needs work,03m 00s
- but work has at least begun,03m 04s
- and then there's fifty percent currently that03m 05s
- are not getting anything done at all.03m 08s
- These are just open active issues03m 11s
- that don't have any patches to correct the problem03m 14s
- or to add the feature yet.03m 17s
- At the same time, Drupal's getting a lot more complicated,03m 20s
- and it's really hard to help with a project03m 22s
- when you don't fully understand it03m 25s
- or feel like you have good enough grasp of what's happening03m 27s
- in order to be able to help improve that.03m 30s
- So the solution we're aiming for here is03m 33s
- to make it easy for people to learn Drupal and to contribute.03m 36s
- In 2011, 03m 40s
- Bryan Hirsch had a conversation with several Core developers,03m 43s
- talking about the problem and a solution to that,03m 46s
- and the Boston Drupal User Group03m 49s
- decided that they would dedicate some of their time and their meet-ups03m 52s
- to help solve this problem and actually work out a plan of attack.03m 55s
- So they worked on this for six months,03m 59s
- and then at Drupal Con Denver in 2012,04m 02s
- they presented the work they had done so far04m 04s
- and asked the rest of the community04m 07s
- to come join them in trying to built the solution04m 10s
- and make it actually work for the community.04m 14s
- So the core of what they came up with 04m 17s
- was something called the Drupal Ladder,04m 19s
- and basically, the idea was to 04m 22s
- take all the stuff that people can do to contribute,04m 24s
- organize those contributions 04m 28s
- and the skills needed to do those contributions,04m 31s
- and organize them in a progression that makes sense,04m 34s
- and then make it so that each step in that progression04m 39s
- is easy if you've completed the one before,04m 42s
- and then the final, really important piece04m 47s
- is to make the very first step on that ladder04m 49s
- easy for anyone, regardless of their level of experience04m 51s
- so that they can start out with the most 04m 55s
- basic understanding of what's happening, 04m 58s
- and then work their way through the system and learn more and more of it05m 00s
- and be able to contribute more and more.05m 03s
- So when you look at the ladder,05m 05s
- if you find where you are, which rung you are sitting on on the ladder,05m 07s
- you can see how you can apply the skills05m 09s
- you already have to Drupal Core,05m 14s
- and you can also look at the rung above you05m 17s
- and take a step up and learn the next lesson05m 20s
- to improve your skills,05m 22s
- and then again, see how you can apply that to contributing to Core.05m 24s
- The way that the group implemented this concept of a ladder05m 29s
- in their meet-ups was by having a variety of sprints, 05m 33s
- and there are two kind of sprints05m 37s
- and the first starting point05m 39s
- for a group are Learn Sprints,05m 42s
- and that is where, as a group during a meet-up, 05m 45s
- people work on the lessons in the ladder together.05m 47s
- Related to the Learn Sprints, you have Issue Sprints05m 50s
- to actually work on Drupal Core issues,05m 54s
- and the way that these tend to be set up is you'll have a05m 57s
- spreadsheet where you actually decide06m 00s
- which Core issues you're going to work on,06m 03s
- and then people sign up to work on those particular issues06m 05s
- in pairs so that you have people working together 06m 08s
- to learn things so that if you're not completely comfortable06m 11s
- with it, you sort of have a buddy06m 14s
- that's going to help you walk through the entire process06m 16s
- of not just working on the issue itself06m 19s
- in terms of the code or the documentation that needs to be changed,06m 22s
- but also the whole process of actually submitting a patch06m 25s
- or reviewing patches or working on those kinds of things.06m 29s
- From all of the work that they did,06m 32s
- doing these sprints, determining how to break the sprints out,06m 34s
- coming up with a ladder, writing a lot of lessons,06m 37s
- there are a number of resources that are now available.06m 39s
- The first resource would be the DrupalLadder.org Web site,06m 42s
- which has the ladder itself with all of the lessons and instructions,06m 45s
- as well as directions for how to run your own meet ups.06m 49s
- We also have an installation profile called Drupal Ladder Profile;06m 53s
- it's at the Drupper Ladder Project Learn, though,06m 57s
- and that basically will set up a local version of the DrupalLadder.org Web site,07m 01s
- so that you'll have the ladder and the lessons and everything 07m 05s
- on your local machine; you don't need to have access to the Internet.07m 08s
- We also have a group on Groups.Drupal.org/drupal-ladder07m 11s
- and that is people who are helping organize and work on the Drupal Ladder itself,07m 17s
- to be able to communicate and talk issues out and that kind of thing.07m 21s
- And related to that, there's also the 07m 25s
- IRC channel #drupal-ladder07m 28s
- which is again where people who are helping organize and work on the ladder itself,07m 32s
- both the Web site and the installation profile and the lessons07m 37s
- to work together.07m 41s
- We have the problem and we have this idea of a solution07m 43s
- and in terms of measuring, we have achieved our goals.07m 45s
- The goal is a relatively high goal,07m 49s
- and if we go back and look at this chart we had before07m 52s
- of the percentage of contributors07m 55s
- for Drupal Core,07m 59s
- it's at one-tenth of one percent,08m 01s
- which is one out of every one-thousand Drupal users08m 04s
- is currently contributing,08m 07s
- and the goal is to get that to one percent by 2014,08m 09s
- so that's saying we want to get one out of every one-hundred Drupal users08m 13s
- contributing back to Core in some way.08m 16s
- It's a pretty big goal,08m 19s
- but everybody can help us get there.08m 21s
- It's time to get involved,08m 24s
- because this is something that effects everybody who uses Drupal.08m 26s
- You can start off by simply letting people know about DrupalLadder.org08m 29s
- and what we're trying to do here.08m 32s
- Of course you can dive into the lessons and start to work your way through08m 35s
- and become a contributor,08m 38s
- but also helping improve those lessons is a huge help.08m 40s
- You can also bring the Drupal Ladder Learn and Issue Sprints08m 44s
- to your local meet-up.08m 47s
- It's a great way to get your local community involved,08m 49s
