With the addition of Symfony to Drupal core, many Drupal developers are beginning to explore beyond the confines of our own amazing CMS. But where do you start? Conferences can be a great opportunity to step outside of your day-to-day time crunch and learn about new technologies. php[tek] is one of those great opportunities for module developers in the mid-west United States. This conference, now in its 13th year, has over 50 sessions spread over four days, May 14-17, in Chicago, Illinois. This year the conference is also hosting a mentoring summit. At the summit, six speakers will give lightning talks on how to share what you know, make new connections, mentor or get mentored in an online environment, and move your organization to adopt practices and knowledge you learn in the community. In addition to the mentoring summit, php[tek] also offers a hackathon, training day, and an unconference track (much like DrupalCon). Two Drupal community members will be presenting at this year's php[tek]: Chris Tankersley has sessions on Drupal and Node.js, and Emma Jane Westby is talking about bikesheds and Git. The sessions look fantastic and cover topics such as Zend framework, high performance tuning, Symfony, database version control, and creating PHP cloud applications. The full schedule is available online. So, get off the island, get to know some great PHP folks, bone up on your skills, and support Drupal in the larger PHP ecosphere. php[tek] is next week and there are still some tickets left!
