Release Day: Introduction to Domain Access

Weekly Release

About two months ago we released a series on Working with Drupal Multisite, which started with a look at different approaches to handling multiple sites. This week we're pleased to add another series that addresses multiple sites in a different way from the core multisite feature, with the Introduction to Domain Access for Drupal 7 series. This series covers the basics of working with Domain Access to manage multiple domain names all on one Drupal instance—only one code base and one database.

This series uses the same domain names and university scenario that were used in the multisite series example. In this case though, we want the content and users to be more tightly integrated than what we can achieve with multisite. We start off with some of the same foundational knowledge as multisite, in that you need to understand how to work with domain names and Apache virtual hosts to get started. We also discuss the basic concepts of node access control, since this is the underlying system that makes Domain Access work. With that out of the way, we head into getting Domain Access installed on our Drupal site, and begin walking through the myriad configuration options. We enable the package modules we'll be using slowly over several lessons so that you can understand which configuration goes with which modules, and how to tackle them. Domain Access provides many ways to approach building out your "sites" and in this series we'll walk through the basic moving pieces of sharing and restricting content by domain, modifying site settings and themes, and sorting through how the permission controls work. This should provide you with a solid foundation to continue exploring your specific use cases and the many additional modules and features you can use with Domain Access on your own.

To kick things off this week, we'll get some context with an overview of what Domain Access provides for us, an understanding of working with domain names and Apache, and a quick review of the Drupal core node access system.

This Week's Tutorials

Next week we'll get hands-on by configuring the Apache virtual host, installing Domain Access, and beginning to configure our content.
