CourseNew Series: Theming Basics in Drupal 7
Blog postWe've just finished posting a new video series introducing you to Drupal Theming in Drupal 7. "Theming" describes the process of customizing the look and feel of your Drupal site, which involves working with Drupal's templating system at the basic level, and writing customized theming functions in PHP at the more advanced level.
Release Day: Our Drupal 8 Theming Guide
Blog postToday, we're super excited to publish our Drupal 8 Theming guide, a collection of tutorials that will teach you everything you need to know to create amazing Drupal 8 themes. We've put hundreds of hours into researching, digesting and understanding the Drupal 8 theme system. We've poured over the existing documentation and helped to update it whenever we could. We've read the code that makes it all possible, we've dissected core and contributed themes, and talked with front-end developers at Lullabot about their experiences, in order to learn about best practices and unique challenges. And then we boiled it all down into the ultimate Drupal 8 theming guide.
I'm sure you've heard by now that PHPtemplate is being replaced by Twig in Drupal 8. If you're a front end developer, you may be excited or afraid about how this will affect you. Let's take a look at the guiding principles behind the Twig initiative and where you can find documentation for theming in Drupal 8.
Drupalize.Me will be offering our Drupal 8 Theming workshop at Twin Cities DrupalCamp on June 22nd, as well as delivering sessions and attending the sprints. We would love to see you there.
Free Hands-On Theming Course May 18-22
Blog postDrupalCon Minneapolis, and the theming workshop we were planning to present, isn't going to happen this year, but instead we're going to make our Hands-On Theming course free all of next week, May 18–22, the original week of DrupalCon. This online course is based on our in-person workshops and covers the same material. If you enjoy the course, and have the means, we also ask that you donate to the Drupal Association to support their critical work and future DrupalCons.
Sign up is now open for our first ever remote workshop. And Joe provides some additional insight into what we're planning.
We always love the opportunity to participate at in-person Drupal events, hang out with old friends, make new ones, and just in general share our enthusiasm for Drupal with others. That's why we're headed to MidCamp 2017 in Chicago March 30th - April 2nd, where we'll be offering our Drupal 8 Theming workshop, attending the camp, and participating in the sprints.
We’re getting ready to run another iteration of our popular Hands-On Drupal Theming workshop on July 19th, 20th, and 21st, something we haven’t done for over a year as we’ve been focused on teaching Drupal 7 to Drupal 9/10 migrations. In the process of getting ready, I’ve been going through my slides for the workshop and making some updates. Here are the things that jump out to me as important (but work-in-progress) changes in the last year.
We just added a new tutorial all about starting a new theme with Starterkit. Learn how to use it, how it works, and what prompted its addition to Drupal core.
Registration is now open for our next 2 workshops on Drupal migrations and theming! Learn to use Drupal's Migrate API to upgrade from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10, February 26-28, 2024. Learn to create stunning Drupal 9 and 10 themes, March 13-15, 2024.
These remote workshops will happen 100% online via Zoom and other tools. We think you’ll get the most out of it if you come prepared to engage with the instructors and other participants.
They are broken up into 3 distinct 2.5-3 hour units instead of one long 8-hour workshop.
Each workshop unit will consist of a combination of instructor presentation, hands-on exercises, and instructor-lead group discussion. The units build upon one another so you’ll want to be able to attend all 3 days of the workshop you select.

CourseLearn to Theme with Hands-On Exercises
Blog postBased on our popular Drupal 8 Theming Workshop, our new guide, Hands-On Theming (https://drupalize.me/guide/hands-on-theming), is a 7-week course of tutorials and hands-on exercises that will get you up and running with your first Drupal 8 theme. Each week contains tutorials surrounding a key concept in Drupal 8 theming. At the end of each week, you'll have an opportunity to put into practice what you've learned in the related tutorials with a hands-on exercise. By the end of this course, you'll have a working Drupal 8 theme ready for you to further explore and learn concepts in Drupal 8 theming.
To facilitate hands-on practice, we've partnered with Stack Starter (https://stackstarter.io/). To follow along with the steps in each exercise, you can use a customized Stack Starter web-based environment. You'll get a pre-configured Drupal 8 development site ready to start theming. It also includes a web-based file manager and code editor as well as a console where you can run Drush commands.
